When global engineering solutions company, Sandvik Mining & Rock Solutions, wanted to enhance operational efficiencies in staff onboarding processes they understood the value of embracing AI technology to achieve their goal.

Because worker safety is Sandvik’s number one priority, every new employee and contractor is required to complete comprehensive health and safety training.

However, existing onboarding processes were time consuming. Training was delivered face-to-face, without a standardised way to digitally record the training completed by new starters.

“Our Environmental, Health and Safety Coordinator could spend as much as half a day onboarding each new starter which was both time-consuming and resource intensive” says Ryan Fisette, Environmental Health and Safety Manager at Sandvik Canada. “We recognised the need for change and wanted to find a digital solution that could be hosted centrally on our LMS platform.”

Empowering workers with interactive safety training

Sandvik’s EHS team commissioned Guildhawk to convert their static training materials into interactive multilingual e-learning modules using a combination of digital human avatars and expert human oversight to achieve the desired result.

• Regular dialogue between the two teams kept the project on track and enabled potential sticking points to be identified and resolved early-on.

Enhancing the accuracy of future translations

A core requirement for the project was to ensure that technical industry terminology was accurate, consistent, and on-brand across multiple languages. Linguistic reviews were performed to accomplish this.

Once the main project was completed these verified ‘translation memories’ were added to Sandvik’s unique AI dataset so that the correct language informs future GAI translations and increases their accuracy.

Achieving significant operational efficiencies

Since launching the new e-learning modules the amount of staff time spent on training has significantly reduced, saving Sandvik an estimated 48 days per year.

“Now our EHS Coordinator simply sends an email to our new hires asking them to complete the training. There is no further involvement needed unless specifically required,” says Ryan. “This saves our Coordinator up to two hours a day or more than one entire day each week. This time is now well-spent on other activities.”

Improving regulatory compliance

Sandvik also has a digital record to show that each worker has completed their training. This is important for regulatory compliance in the event of a safety incident.

Sandvik continues to work with Guildhawk to regularly update the training modules with the latest regulatory information and industry best practice. An annual subscription to GAI also means that Sandvik can translate other health and safety material such as EHS newsletters, Standard Operating Procedures, safety observation notifications and other general guidance into French and English, whenever the need arises.
